The opportunity
Most legal CRMs are either generic (Salesforce with a legal skin) or first-generation case-management tools that haven’t been rethought in a decade. Lawyers end up with a CRM they work around, not through.
The thesis: build the workflow first (intake → matter → comms → billing → close), then build the product around that workflow. Matter-centric from the ground up.
What we built
Client intake automation
Conflict checks, KYC, engagement letter generation, e-signature — the opening act of every matter, compressed from days to minutes.
Matter management
Matter as the first-class entity. Tasks, deadlines, documents, notes, communications — all hang off it.
Matter-scoped communications
Threaded conversations locked to a matter. Every email, every message, automatically filed. Searchable. Auditable.
Document templates
Merge-field libraries, clause banks, template inheritance. Draft a full engagement pack from matter data in one pass.
Time & billing
Timer capture, narratives, WIP tracking, invoicing, accounts sync. Built for the hours-to-invoice pipeline lawyers actually run.
Audit & compliance layer
Role-based access, audit logs, retention-policy enforcement, data residency — the non-negotiables for handling legal data.
How we built it
We started by mapping the real workflow of the target practice — immigration, family, conveyancing — in detail, then designed the data model around matters. Everything downstream (comms, time, billing, docs) plugged into that spine.
The first shipped version was deliberately narrow: intake + matter + comms. Billing and document automation followed as phase 2 once the core workflow was real.
Outcomes
SmartBarrister operates today as a live CRM for legal practices, with the matter-centric architecture intact. Intake flows run automated; communications stay filed to the matter; the audit layer keeps the data defensible.
What this means if you're hiring us
- We design data models around real workflows — not the other way around.
- We’ve built audit, retention, and role-based access for a regulated domain.
- We’ve integrated document automation, e-signature, and accounts sync end-to-end.
- We’ve shipped intake-to-invoice in production for a profession that doesn’t tolerate "it usually works."
